3D Printing at Bailey Library

The library has a 3D printer that reproduces digital files as solid physical objects. To submit your files and take advantage of this technology email our Adult Services Librarian at reference@baileylibrary.org.
ABOUT OUR 3D PRINTER >>
The library currently has a MakerBot Sketch 3D printer for our free 3D printing service. The printer resides at the reference desk in the adult wing of the library and is managed by the Adult Services Librarian. We use PLA filament for all 3D print requests and the Sketch printer has an enclosed printing platform.
USING OUR 3D PRINTER>>
Our 3D printing service is an introduction to 3D printing technology for hobby-level experiences. We will do our best to accommodate your requests and specifications but we cannot guarantee a particular level of precision.
Before you submit your request, please review the following rules:
- Print requests are free
- If requesting a specific design, files must be in STL format
- Our printer can accommodate files up to 5.75” x 5.75” x 5.75″
- We will call or email you when your print is complete
- The library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request
RESTRICTIONS >>
The library’s 3D printer may not be used to create weapons or materials that:
- Are prohibited by local, state, or federal law
- Are unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or that pose an immediate threat to the well-being of others
- Are inappropriate for the library environment
- Are used to reproduce objects that are subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection
- Resemble or depict weapons and other instruments of destruction
The library will not be liable for functional failure of, or injuries, or property damage caused by objects or materials made through the use of our 3D printer. We strongly recommend that the 3D printer not be used to make objects that could prove harmful or that would result in significant cost to the user if they fail.
DESIGN RESOURCES >>
For specific design requests we recommend using Thingiverse, an online community for 3D printing. Search by keyword, or browse collections and categories for design options. The STL file will be available for download, which you may then email to our Adult Services librarian: reference@baileylibrary.org
We also recommend Tinkercad, a free, web-based 3D design tool for beginner designers that includes lessons and short tutorials on available features.
To fix 3D design files, consider using a free open-source repair software tool like Autodesk Meshmixer.
If all else fails, email our Adult Services Librarian with your idea and we will try out best to find something you will enjoy!
